Hello Maplephiles,

I watched the Golden Globes this past Sunday and I was excited to see that you can’t just “buy” awards by flooding Hollywood with money the way Netflix has been doing over the past two months. 1917 and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood won the two Best Picture awards, which was exciting to see and Netflix with their 17 film nominations won only one award (way to go Laura Dern). I don’t hate Netflix I just wish they would develop some coherent strategy for releasing the wonderful films they make.

We still have some more work to do on The Maple Café. Some customers have mentioned they miss the fireplace, they would like more menu items, and that the patio feels “cold.” We agree with all these things and will be working hard the next few months to improve. Please keep giving us your suggestions and we will add them to the list. However, I do want to state that what we did will allow us to have a café for years to come. That was the goal. If you love us, please give us a good Yelp review!

This week we open the Golden Globe-winner for Best Drama, 1917. Director Sam Mendes also won Best Director, which he did for American Beauty 20 years ago. We will hold Bombshell, Little Women, and a show of Parasite for your viewing pleasure this weekend. Also, check out Just Mercy at The Riviera. It is a brilliantly acted, powerful movie. Just bring something to wipe your tears.

Next Thursday I booked one of my favorite films of all time for Devin Cameron to present. I then realized I could not be there, so I rescheduled the movie. One of the benefits of being the founder of the program! The movie for the next Secret Cinema debuted about 10 years ago and is rated R. It is a drama that clocks in around 1 hour and 45 minutes. One of the artists that created this movie should be nominated for his work in 2019. In fact, you may just see his name on screen at The Maple this weekend.

Announcements from Ruth:
On Sunday, January 13th, The Maple will present a special LIVE Q&A with Charlize Theron at 4 pm before that showing of Bombshell. This is being brought to us from Lionsgate and Fathom events. Tickets are available through the website or at the box office.  If you haven’t seen Bombshell yet, this would be the perfect time!

Also this weekend…
Saturday, 1/11/20 – The Met Live in HD: Wozzeck at 12:55 p.m.
