February 12, 2020

Hello Maplephiles,

Thank you to everyone who came to the Oscar party. We had over 150 people show up which blew my mind. I was just getting back from a vacation and had a date with my kids, but I will make sure I don’t miss it next year. I went 20-4 on my picks, but got Best Picture wrong, as usual. This is the third year in a row that I get the biggest category wrong. I always go with the favorite. At least I really liked Parasite even though Jojo Rabbit was my favorite. Both will still be playing this weekend for anyone who has missed them.

I don’t want to complain, but getting old stinks. Unfortunately, everyone has to deal with the same crap so I never get sympathy. As soon as I start to tell anyone, they always have something that is worse. It's like a contest to see who can come up with the worst ailment. Soon I am going to be walking around like Billy Crystal from the beginning of City Slickers (Zen).

This week, in honor of skiing and comedy, we bring you Downhill starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and John William Ferrell. This a remake of the 2014 Swedish movie Force Majeure and might be a great Valentine’s Day movie. Ruth says it is a great Maple movie and it is only 86 minutes long. Less than half of The Irishman. We also are going to open a highly reviewed movie called The Assistant. I fought for this one as it stars Julia Garner who won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in A Drama Series for Ozark. The movie has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Secret Cinema: New Hollywood is next week and is another musical. This one is from post-2000 and is not rated R and not rated G. It is in the middle. I promise no more musicals for a while, it is just February and we all need something other than cold, wind, and snow.

Ruth's Ramblings...
Friday is Valentine’s Day…What better way to show your Valentine how much you care than to take them out to The Maple this weekend. Check out our Cocktail Specials in The Maple Café and see a great movie!
